Concrete Counter Tops :: Pros and Cons |
|
Concrete has become a popular choice among counter top materials lately. However, it is by no means out doing traditional materials used in counter top production such as granite, marble or melamine. Concrete is a versatile material which has a distinct look and feel. Like any other material it has its good point and its bad points when it comes to counter tops.
Concrete has been in use for over 5000 years. It would be impossible to say when, where and who made the first ‘counter top’ from concrete. So it’s nothing new to make counters out of concrete, but it is new to make nice looking esthetically and artistically pleasing ones. People are looking for new and exiting materials for counters and concrete is on the list.
There are more materials for counters than ever before. Paper, glass, stainless steel, marble, granite, wood, bamboo to name a few, all of these have benefits and all have drawbacks. There is no one perfect material for kitchen counters. Concrete, because of its weight often requires that exiting counter be reinforced to take the load. Sometimes it is not even practical to use concrete due to limitations in a buildings or homes structure. It also is susceptible to staining, especially acidic liquids such as wine.
Since concrete can be molded is it unique to most materials often used on counter tops. Properly reinforced it can be used to make interesting contours and shapes which no other material can match. Embedding esthetic aggregates is also a unique property that sets it apart from most other materials. Colored glass or sea shells are some popular aggregates to use in kitchen or bathroom concrete counters.
