Movable or Pre-Built Kitchen Islands |

Kitchen islands are great. I think they are one of the best inventions for your home in a long time. It’s funny how social traditions form our view on what we should and shouldn’t have in our home.
The old style kitchens with a table or bench table and then a separate dinning room seem to have been replaced by the more open concept idea. Life styles of today don’t lend well to eating meals at the same time together at a table.
Families with kids, especially in their teens or older generally have as many schedules as they do family members. The island in the kitchen idea works great for a quick and convenient way to eat alone or with others who are not on your time line.
If only installing an island in your kitchen was as easy and convenient as using them. Depending on your setup, installation, construction and materials can add up to a lot these days. There is however and alternative that is not as costly and can sometimes be better than having one built of building one yourself. Pre-built or moveable islands are sometimes a great way to go. Retailers like Ikea carry a number of models that can often accommodate a variety of kitchen layouts and spaces.
One of the great things about a kitchen island on wheels is of course that it moves. This can be a great for number of reasons. Cleaning, convenience, (move it closer to the sink), etc. If you build a permanent structure you are pretty much stuck with it. A moveable island can always be sold or stored away if the need arises.
If you do decide to go with a permanent structure consider building a mockup one out of cardboard and tape and placing it in your kitchen for a few days. This will quickly let you know if your plans for a permanent one are going to be in your way or not.
