Water Saving Tips For Your Kitchen and Bath

In case you haven’t heard there are a lot of people on the planet these days and the number seems to keep growing. Water, or clean usable water, is not something to be wasted since we kind of need it to survive… Before you go out and buy all new appliance, faucets, toilets and so on, try just doing a few things that cost very little time and money. These are some common, but not common enough, tips for conserving water in your home.

1. Tap aerators are a great inexpensive way to convert most older kitchen faucets into more efficient one. They are usually only a couple of bucks and install easily. The swivel head ones also give you more convenient spray angles too.

2. Don’t run the water when you wash your hands and face. Fill the sink slightly and then rinse with running water. Along the same topic, don’t run the water while you brush your teeth either! You are suppose to brush between 2 and 3 minutes so turn the taps off and do some thinking, then return and rinse your mouth out using a cup.

3. If you drink lots of water and like it cold keep a jug in the fridge. If you have to run the tap each time to get the cold water you likely waste 90% of what you actually drink.

4. Replace leaky taps and faucets. This is in most cases a very inexpensive job and most people can do it themselves. If you don’t want to hire a plumber (and I don’t blame you) you can ask a hand neighbor or friend to do it. Leaky taps and faucets account for a lot of the water wasted in our world.

5. Full loads in the dishwasher. Don’t be lazy… It uses just as much water to wash one cup as it does to do a full load. Apply this to your washing machine while your are at it too.

6. When you take a bath plug the drain before you turn on the taps. A good number of people turn on the taps and adjust the temperature while the water is running. Then they plug the drain. Unfortunately this one doesn’t work well for the shower.

These are just 6 ways to conserve water. If everyone in North America did these 6 simple things we would have cheaper cleaner water for many more years. There are of course a lot of other ways to conserve water. The best thing to do is pretend that water cost as much as fine aged Scotch. Everytime you turn on the tap picture $300 per gallon slipping and sliding down the drain. You will soon come up with a whole bunch of new ways to stop the waste.
