At one time Kenmore had a great name for itself. Sears had a great name for itself. Now a days it seems you can’t trust any big chain store farther than you can throw them. I have always wondered who made Kenmore appliances and I imagined it must be more than one manufacture. Sears of course does not do any of the manufacturing and so they farm out their products under spec to various manufactures and suppliers.


Kenmore washing machines are often made by Whirlpool but it is not always the case. Inglis also makes washers and dryers for Sears as well as dishwashers. You can tell who made the appliance by the serial number. Some websites like Appliances 101 list a good number of the manufactures and how to identify who makes what.


Depending on what you are buying it is a good idea to check out the manufactures of the particular Kenmore appliance you are looking at. There is usually extra information and ratings available on the Internet for say Whirlpool as well as the Kenmore name. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples and not apples to oranges.


You need to be careful of is the fact that places like Sears have appliance made to spec. So you may think you are getting the same dishwasher but under the Kenmore name when you actually getting a watered down version with some Sears exclusives. This can work the other way as well though. Sometimes Sears can actually request exclusives that make the product better and which are not available if you bought it directly under the manufactures name.
